Hailed by Time Magazine as 'the poet-prophet of alternative medicine', Deepak Chopra is a world renowned physician who has devoted his life to helping people experience physical healing, emotional freedom and higher states of consciousness.
Born in New Delhi, India, Chopra settled in the United States in 1970. He studied medicine in both India and the US, and has found success as a lecturer and author.
He is the author of over 55 books published in 85 languages, including 14 best sellers such as Peace is on the way and Reinventing the Body, Resurrecting the Soul. Chopra has worked for more than 20 years in the fields of alternative medicine, body-mind health and quantum mechanics.
But his reception in the medical world has been anything but perfect. Disturbed by the Western reliance on medication, Chopra's practice involves integrating aspects of both eastern and western medicine.
Known to some as a money-making guru or advisor to the famous, Chopra continues to spread his message about the positive impact of meditation, yoga and alternative therapy.
Chopra began publishing self-help books in the late 1980s. He has been a leader in teaching about Ayurvedic medicine, a traditional medicine native of India as well as the power of meditation and yoga.
In 1996, he opened his Chopra Centre for Wellbeing in California, a spiritual centre that offers various programs and retreats to assist people in nurturing their health and restoring balance in their lives.
Chopra communicates the importance of finding meaning in all of life's events, he encourages individuals to achieve stillness and open their hearts, and he spreads the message of peace in all that he does. His work in a variety of self-help realms has reached millions of people and helped individuals all over the world, including members of the Brock community.
Kristy Colasante, a third-year nursing student, describes her thoughts on Chopra as both positive and negative.
"At first it was tough for me to wrap my head around the idea of Chopra, and that he wasn't some kind of cash grab," said Colasante. "But what he is all about, and specifically his work around Ayurvedic medicine, has a lot of significance in my life."
Colasante mentions she enjoys learning about how to find balance between Eastern and Western medicine.
"It's this kind of forward thinking that helps me stay healthy and feel good. I'm studying to be a nurse, but that doesn't mean I have full faith in Western medicine. Alternative therapies are important in my life, and Chopra has definitely been a part of my journey."
At 63 years-old, Chopra still has many years left to continue inspiring individuals and spreading his message of human empowerment. It is something the alternative medicine community has to look forward to, including Colasante.
"Yes, I will probably check out his new work. Its messages like his that so many people can learn so much from."
